Syllables are estimated with vowel-group rules; irregular words may be off by one.
How to use the Syllable Counter
- Type or paste your text into the box.
- See total syllables, word count and average syllables per word.
- Remember: English is irregular, so treat the count as a close estimate.
Why it’s an estimate
English syllables don’t follow tidy rules, so this counter uses vowel-group heuristics plus a short list of known tricky words (every, family, vegetable and the like). It handles silent final e, the -le ending in table and apple, and the -ed and -es endings that only add a syllable after certain consonants.
It will still be off by one on some words — names, loanwords and unusual spellings especially. For haiku or lyrics, read the line aloud as a final check.
